About Us
The Mission
Founded by Sharlayan native Otto Valtin, the Valtin Institute of Research and Dissemination is an organization that believes in the discovery and development of knowledge, with results and benefits universally shared with all peoples across the world. Despite some disparate views between some members of the Forum, the Institute has been formally recognized and brought in as an extension of the gleaners’ organization and the Studium in Old Sharlayan. Scholars and adventurers of all kinds are welcomed to assist VIRD with in-house research and projects, or go on daring expeditions to reclaim lost and forgotten knowledge.
The History of VIRD
The Founding
Chapter 1
The Valtin Institute was founded in the wake of Otto Valtin’s departure from a mercenary company of privateers known as Black Garden. He had been operating as a contracted medical doctor until their final fateful mission which saw the destruction of their vessel and many lives. Otto, however, contacted a few old friends, namely Xam Jeulerand, and along with a few other remnants of the Black Garden started a research institute. This was to be the realization of Otto’s ideology that once aligned him with the fringe group in Old Sharlayan known as Prometheus.

Researchers and Students
VIRD is a place of learning and research with many resources across the world. Come to collaborate and learn as you research new projects and develop yourself as a scholar. While there are no strict classes in VIRD and it isn’t a school, it does offer lecture series and internship learning as well as an extensive library to its students.
Positions: The following are areas of research that are well staffed and understaffed which could be of interest to new members.
Well Staffed Departments: Engineering, Magitechnologies, Aetherology, Thaumaturgical Theory, Anthropology, and Alchemy
Understaffed Departments: , Archeology, Conjurogical Theory, Musical Theory, Economics and Trade, Floral Biologies, Political Sciences, Medicinal Studies, Literary Studies, and Zoologies
Clubs: Like any campus of knowledge and gathering, small clubs have formed over time that focus in on different subjects. Be a part of a group or start your own with others in the FC!
Adventure and Purpose
As an extension of the Old Sharlayan Gleaner Corp greater influence, the Institute heads out into the world more often than before on expeditions. The world of Etheirys can be a dangerous place on the best of days and those with skill as adventurers or mercenaries are always welcome alongside the scholars.
Sharlayan Influences
Old Sharlayan has a vested interest in the Institute as an extension of their Gleaner Corps. Along with being very welcoming to Sharlayan characters of all stripes, VIRD also does many events in Sharlayan itself where its members can explore the many facets of the scholarly society that have been developed over the history of FF14.
Bleeding Heart
The Praeceptor of the Institute in particular is a man loathe to turn away anyone in need. More often than not a lost soul may stumble in and join purely because they’re a lost soul. Ultimately, VIRD is a family and we love adding new people to it.

University and Library Atmosphere
Alongside the main Institute, VIRD also has many facilities that allow for a population of studious individuals to reside there. Alongside the expansive libraries on the main and lower floors are cafeterias, dormitories, laboratories, study areas, reading areas, and more!
